I’m here today with Leigh Parks local talent, Eloise Bryant, a practitioner in singing and theatre. Eloise has grown up surrounded by music and enjoyed it so much she decided to make it her life.
First thing first I asked Eloise how long she’s wanted to sing, “Ever since I was little to be honest, I’ve just sort of started singing since I was tiny and it escalated from there, it was from year 6 and onwards I’ve sort of changed into a musical theatre style singing”. We recalled her past self and how like any other small child you’d catch her singing around the house at the top her lungs.
It’s quite common for people pursing music to have the one big celebrity who’s influenced their style but with Eloise, it’s no different, “I was influenced by famous people, I don’t know, Ellen Paige? (Laughs)”. Eloise spoke to me about a personal influence, the one person who set her on her musical theatre track in life, Max Zackwell, “I had lessons with Max Zackwell and he said ‘Oh have you ever done theatre before?’ and it after one led to another I was singing memory in my junior school and I fell in love with music, since then I just researched musical theatre and followed it from there”.
Eloise is no stranger to the stage, playing in plays like Hairspray, Sound of Music and Bugsy Malone, “I played Tracy in Hairspray and one of the children in Sound of Music. The one that put toads in their beds (laughs). I was also in a show called Mandy which John Gledall (music teacher), only a small part at the beginning - I was kind of like the small narrator at the beginning”.
Eloise is influenced by a lot of different genders of music, a main one being pop. She proudly gives of prides of pop through her quirky clothing and song choice, we spoke about her other options involving her future with singing, “I’ll definitely have to do something to do with performing arts but singing is something I’ve always wanted to do, so it’ll probably be pop music I’ll go into. I do play guitar but I only play it as a hobby, musical theatre really is my main goal”.
Whilst talking about options I brought up University with Eloise, “I’m thinking about going to a performing arts school in London area”, London is filled with opportunities involving music and Eloise excitingly explained to me her plans, “Maybe after school I can either go into an agency or like cruise lining, singing on ships!”
Of course to reach her goals of singing Eloise has had to give up luxuries like chocolate, mints and spicy food – How does she keep it up?
“Keep going and if you really love singing I wouldn’t let anyone stop you and it’s a hard industry, very tough but at the end of the day you can do it so give it your all and show everyone what you’ve got. Keep practising as well. Make sure you look after your voice”. Apparently chocolate, lemon, mints, chewing gum and spicy food can all damage ones vocal cord!
